CSS Basics: 8. Relative Sizes (EM and REM)

We covered absolute units like pixel values, and we covered relative units like percentage. Now let’s talk about another super important relative unit. EM. This is mostly used to size text. Sizing your fonts is absolutely crucial in having a good looking page. It’s one of the most important aspects of UI design. Typography. I mentioned default browser styles a couple of videos ago. Let’s look at H1 in Chrome. H1 has this weird font-size value of 2em. That line is the reason why H1 so big without you writing any CSS. But what is that? EM? EM is another relative unit of measurement, similar to percentage. EM always has a number in front of it. 2em, 3em, .5em. Font-size: 2em means, hey what is my expected font-size if I didn’t have any other CSS? I want my size to be 2 times that.

HTML Basics: 9. HTML Useful Things: br, hr, input type, em, strong, img alt

https:// Here are a few useful things to remember when writing HTML. BR Is a break. A line break. If you wanna put a break within your text, if you just press ENTER and go to the next line in your code, it doesn’t mean the browser will render it. It actually ignores it, we call this whitespace. Just like it ignores the spaces or tabs in the beginning of the line, it will ignore your ENTER. By the way spaces and tabs, that’s what Richard in Silicon Valley was talking about in this episode, and one of the reasons he didn’t get laid. Anyway, back to line break: if you have to go to the next line you COULD use a BR. We just talked about Semantics and BR is not good practice. You’re better off using multiple P tags but say you had an AD

CSS Basics: 2. Three ways to write CSS in an HTML page

Before we write any CSS I want you to know… all browsers already have a bunch of CSS in them. The reason why H1 is bigger than P without you writing any CSS, is because the browser comes with a set of default styles. You can see these in Chrome if you just inspect element say on an H1 (so right click, inspect element) and go down to the styles tab. Here they are. I’ll tell you what they mean soon. They might be slightly different from browser to browser. But they do exist. So now that we know that, it’s time for us to write our own styles. There are 3 ways to change the styles of your page. First one is Inline styles. This means within HTML, using an attribute directly added to your elements. I tell you why that’s a terrible idea here. But here’s an example just so you know ho

HTML Basics: 2. Elements

https:// Every HTML page is made up of these things called elements, or tags or nodes. They’re all referring to the same thing. Pretty much. Which are these building blocks that you put together to create an HTML page. That simple. They’re like bricks you put on top of each other to build a wall. But don’t… build a wall, cuz that’s stupid. Look at GQ, or pretty much any other page on the internet. THIS. is a block, so is this, so is this. Pretty soon you’ll start to notice clear separations between different pieces of a page. Chances are those are built using separate HTML elements. There are a lot of different kinds of elements. So the first one I wanna show you is the P tag. Paragraph. It’s used as a building block to crea
