Bud Grafting with Grandpa’s Orchard

Grafting 101 Step-by-step instructions: 1. Cut on an angle to put a notch in a clean space in the bark 2. Go up an inch or so and cut out a piece of bark through to the cambium layer down toward the notch 3. Cut the bud off the bud stick in a similar fashion, start underneath the bud with a notch and go up three-quarters of an inch and slice a small piece down to the notch 4. Line the bud piece up with the root stock, as if you are replacing the bark you’ve taken out. 5. Wrap good so the bud is pressed up against the root stock nice and tight. 6. Line up the bud as if it is replacing the bark. Put a slip not at the end. Then… in the spring… Grandpa Matt demonstrates on a fall root stock but in the spring as you can imagine all the leaves will be bare. 7. Cut the top off right above
