Restoring these lands will return life to the soil and to the communities who know them best and depend on them for their livelihoods. As new trees and plants grow, transforming drylands into greener landscapes, they will help combat climate change, desertification and contribute to humanity’s efforts to save the planet. “There is no more food in the gardens. The sun is burning everything,” says 9-year-old John from Vanuatu. In March 2015, Vanuatu was hit by Cyclone Pam which destroyed many houses, buildings and ruined crops. Yet to have the chance to recover, it is now experiencing extreme dry weather due to El Nino.
