April is the Month of Microfinance, so it’s the perfect time to honor the hard work of borrowers around the world like Gina, a farmer in the Philippines. Gina is an inspiring example of how multiple microloans can help a family over many years, enabling them to steadily build a business and improve their lives. Watch her story and share to celebrate #MOMF16 Why we do what we do at Kiva: We envision a world where all people – even in the most remote areas of the globe – hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others. Lourdes was only 18 when she says her world came crashing down around her. She had been working as a maid from the age of 14, contributing what little money she earned to her struggling mother and siblings. Then she found out she was pregnant. She was alone, cast aside by her family and the father of her child. When her son, Victor, was born, Lourdes pieced together work, trying to keep their little family of 2 afloat. On a journey to understand one of our generationâs greatest challenges and opportunities â” ending the AIDS epidemic â” Global Fund Ambassador Diane Kruger met Nicolet, a young woman living with HIV, in a small township near Cape Town in South Africa where young women and girls are twice as likely to contract HIV as their male peers. This is Nicoletâs story. In South Africa and many of the other countries hardest hit by HIV, the Global Fund supports programs which are working to prevent HIV-infection for women and girls, as well as treatment and support for those who are infected. The NGOs Thembacare and Yabonga are two of the Global Fund-supported implementing partners carrying out this essential work.
