Resilience in action: Malawi floods 2015

International development agency Christian Aid enables people to move beyond survival and subsistence, to enjoy thriving and dignified lives. This means enough food and a steady income, safe and healthy living conditions, and the resources and confidence to take new opportunities, even in the face of disasters, climate change, conflict and disease. We support people to strengthen their livelihoods and manage risks that threaten them. We call this building a resilient livelihood. In Malawi, Christian Aid leads a consortium of 11 partners to deliver the Enhancing Community Resilience Programme (ECRP), a five-year initiative working to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, reduce vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of around 300,000 people in seven districts. Running until 2016, ECRP

House Construction with Plastic Bottles by Samarpan Foundation

For more information: CONSTRUCTION WITH BOTTLES Do you remember the last time you bought a drink in a plastic bottle? At a club for teenage girls in Sierre Leone, 18-year-old Mbalu leads by example

Subscribe to UNICEF here: Teenage pregnancy is one of the most pervasive social problems in Sierra Leone today – more than one third of all pregnancies involve teenage girls. UNICEF, in collaboration with the NGO BRAC, is tackling this complex issue through a simple idea — providing a place where teenage girls enjoy hanging out while they have training in life skills, gain valuable knowledge and access mentoring from peers. Mbalu Bumbuya, 18, a mentor at one such club for adolescent girls called ‘the Wharf Club’, is changing lives with her passion to teach and motivate her peers. “I tell them how to protect themselves so that they can excel in life,” she says. “And I encourage them not to drop out of school.” The club has also helped Mbalu stay focused on her educa
