Resilience in action: Malawi floods 2015

International development agency Christian Aid enables people to move beyond survival and subsistence, to enjoy thriving and dignified lives. This means enough food and a steady income, safe and healthy living conditions, and the resources and confidence to take new opportunities, even in the face of disasters, climate change, conflict and disease. We support people to strengthen their livelihoods and manage risks that threaten them. We call this building a resilient livelihood. In Malawi, Christian Aid leads a consortium of 11 partners to deliver the Enhancing Community Resilience Programme (ECRP), a five-year initiative working to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, reduce vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of around 300,000 people in seven districts. FAO’s work on protecting, saving & restoring agricultural livelihoods

Today, there are 795 million hungry people in the world. Food is a basic human right, yet this right is violated every day. The magnitude and impact of crises and disasters is increasing. The poorest and hungry are less able to absorb, recover and adapt. 75 % of the poorest populations rely on agriculture for their food and income. Livelihoods that depend on agriculture are on the front line of protracted crises, food chain emergencies and natural hazards and climate-related disasters.
