World’s first virtual train track unveiled in central China

The world’s first virtual track train was unveiled on Friday in the city of Zhuzhou in central China’s Hunan Province. The train, which is 32 meters long and 3.4 meters high, can accommodate 307 passengers and has a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour. Instead of tracks, the train runs along white-dotted lines on the test ground, controlled by hundreds of sensors. The train also uses rubber tires, which makes the ride like riding the bus. Its lithium titanate battery enables the train to run 25 kilometers after just 10 minutes of charging. 2018/8/31: How is China depicted by African media?

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is exploring new ways to elevate Sino-African cooperation. Trade and relations between China and Africa have significantly strengthened over the past decade, including the launch of Belt & Road Initiative projects and investment in Africa, which has attracted plenty of attention from the international media. However, the tone of the coverage tends to differ, depending on the country. So what’s the media’s role in shaping such perceptions? And as China’s Belt & Road Initiative enters its fifth year, how are journalists from China and Africa portraying cooperation between the two regions? Two journalists who have been running stories about Sino-African relations joined The Point: Hudson Kuteesa with The New Times from Rwanda and Trix Ingado Lu

Luxury is suddenly a lot cheaper in Turkey

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told Turks on Friday to sell their gold and US dollars to support the country’s currency, saying “If there’s anyone that has dollars, euros or gold under your pillows, they should go to our banks and change them into Turkish lira.” The lira has lost more than 40 percent of its value this year. It hit a record low after Trump announced high tariffs on imports from Turkey. Trade war could exacerbate slippage

Trade war or not, Chinese companies are already reining in American brands. According to a recent report, popular household names in the States — such as Apple, Starbucks and Procter & Gamble’s Pampers — are already seeing their dominance challenged, a potential threat to the huge revenue streams American firms see in China.
